National Health Association HIN Honors Adam Tenner of Metro TeenAIDS

Leading Local Advocate to be Presented withRyan White Award for Service to Prevent HIV/AIDS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Education Association Health Information Network (NEA HIN) announced today that Adam Tenner, Executive Director for Metro TeenAIDS, is the 2012 recipient of the Ryan White Award for Service to Prevent HIV/AIDS.

Each year, NEA HIN presents the Ryan White Award to an individual or organization that has dramatically improved the delivery of HIV prevention programs. The award will be presented tonight at NEA’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Caucus Dinner as part of the National Education Association’s Representative Assembly in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Tenner was chosen for this honor because of his life-long commitment to ending the HIV epidemic in Washington, DC – starting with DC youth. For over 20 years, Mr. Tenner has been a champion for HIV-positive young people and for prevention in Washington DC, the jurisdiction with the highest HIV/AIDS infection rate in the United States.

“I’m privileged to recognize the successful work of Adam Tenner,” said Jerry Newberry, Executive Director of NEA HIN. “When the world first learned of HIV/AIDS, the health care community struggled to provide patients the facts to overcome the fear. Through 20 plus years of education and outreach, Mr. Tenner’s leadership and dedication changed the way we talk about HIV/AIDS, the way we prevent HIV/AIDS, and the way we educate about HIV/AIDS. Mr. Tenner exemplifies the Ryan White Award.”

“The HIV/AIDS health crisis in Washington DC needs the kind of attention that only a powerful ally like NEA HIN can provide,” said Adam Tenner, Executive Director of Metro TeenAIDS. “It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by an organization that I respect so deeply. Receiving the Ryan White Award will strengthen my resolve to continue my life’s work of creating the first AIDS-free generation.”
