NEA HIN Celebrates 25th Anniversary
Non-profit Organization Celebrates 25 Years of
Making Public Schools Healthier and Safer
The National Education Association Health Information Network (NEA HIN) celebrates its 25th Anniversary at the 2012 National Education Association (NEA) Representative Assembly (RA).
In 1987, the NEA took action to educate members and students about HIV/AIDS and established NEA HIN as a 501(C) (3) organization.
Charged with promoting the health of public education employees and students, NEA HIN expanded to offer additional programs and services to meet the changing needs of NEA members and their students.
This past year, NEA HIN:
• Worked with partners to feed 10,000 students breakfast in 83 schools with high percentages of students on free or reduced lunch via the Breakfast in the Classroom program;
• Partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to create a new food allergy resource for school employees and helped inform new CDC guidelines for pre-K through 12 schools. Once approved, those guidelines will be sent to every school district in the nation;
• Expanded work on indoor environmental quality, providing guidance and training to educators in 22 school districts.
“NEA HIN is proud to have helped improve the well-being of children and hard-working teachers and education support professionals across the nation,” said NEA HIN Executive Director Jerry Newberry. “We are grateful for the support and leadership of our partners, the NEA HIN Board members, NEA President Dennis Van Roekel, and most importantly, the members of the NEA across the country. NEA HIN stands ready to meet the most pressing health and safety challenges in schools.”
NEA HIN partners with for-profit, government, and non-profit entities to implement its programs. It also accepts individual donations directly or through making a donation.
