Did You Know? YOU Can Help Draft Local School Wellness Policy

Nutrition in the classroomParents and educators work together to help guide children toward healthy choices at home and in the classroom.

But did you know that you can also play a role in helping to create policies that will improve the health and wellness of your child(ren) or students?

Local Wellness Policy

Every school district that participates in the National School Lunch Program is required by law to establish a wellness policy for all schools within the district.

Local wellness policies are collaboratively developed by parents, students, educators, health professionals, school administrators and the public.

They’re an important tool for parents and school districts in promoting student wellness, preventing and reducing childhood obesity, and providing peace of mind that school meals are meeting the minimum national nutrition standards.

Local Wellness Committee

Your school district should have a Wellness Committee that helps create its Wellness Policy – ask your principal or superintendent for information on how you can join the committee. Or if one doesn’t exist – join with other parents and educators to create one!

Resources to Develop Local Wellness Policy

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a rich online resource to help you develop a local school wellness policy.

Whether you’re looking for general school wellness policy requirements, studies on the impact of wellness policy implementation, or success stories and ideas to boost your school’s wellness efforts – this resource will help get you started.
