Boots Are Made For Walking—Sometimes!

Posted by on January 5, 2012

Happy New Year!  I
always find it exciting to start a new book (no Kindle yet), and that’s what
the turn of the year does for me, too.
It’s like being given a fresh slate to do with as one pleases—I guess
that’s why people make resolutions to change for the better.  My resolution for this year is to accomplish
a little more each day than I did the day before.  Of course, that is a very subjective thing to
measure, so I need to hold myself accountable.

One example can prove the point.  Over the holidays I bought myself a gift—a
pair of boots to wear with pants.  Not
outside boots—inside boots that you can wear outside.  I have never had a pair of them before,
although I had heard that a well-fitting pair of boots is the most comfortable
footwear in the world.  When I put them
on in the store, they felt great—no breaking in needed.  I wore them a couple of days later to run
some errands and go to lunch with my husband.

After a few hours, I was terribly disappointed, because they
were nowhere near as comfortable as I had expected.  I was glad to get home and take them off, and
that was when I realized that I had been wearing them on the wrong feet!

Honest to goodness—true story.

So, my change for the better the next day COULD have been
putting my shoes on the right feet, but I don’t think it would have counted.

This year, improving my health is going to be important to
me, so some of the little changes I make will focus on that.  One of the good things I did for myself this
past fall was getting a flu shot, and I was very glad I did.  In early December, I attended a meeting with
a woman who was deathly sick with the flu (she hadn’t had her shot).  It was an important meeting for her, so I understood
why she came, but I must say that it was a little scary because we hugged hello
and goodbye.  Praises be, I stayed
healthy, but boy was I happy I had gotten the vaccine!

NEA HIN does quite a bit of work in the area of educating
members, parents, and others about the importance of following the vaccine
schedule recommended by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
 We are very
grateful to the funders
who provide us with support to carry out this important work, because
vaccination is the most efficient and cost effective way to prevent the spread
of disease.

We have resources
available here on our website (Talking
about Adult Vaccination
is one of them), so do check out the information so
that you can make informed decisions about vaccinations for yourself and others
in your care.

It’s awfully cold out today, but, then again, it’s
winter.  Bundle up and stay warm if you
live in areas where temperatures plunge, and smile if you live in areas where
they don’t.  Have a wonderful year, and
take a tiny step every day to get or stay healthy.  Just make sure that you start each day with
your shoes on the right feet!
