9.24.14 Want to Volunteer? Top Green Apple Day of Service Project Ideas
At the Center for Green Schools, we know that educators are some of the busiest people on the planet and that back-to-school time is no exception to this rule. But we also know that educators care passionately about their classrooms and communities, and we see the impact they have every year on Green Apple Day of Service. That’s why we’ve brainstormed new pathways specifically for educators to get involved and make a difference – read on!
The third annual Green Apple Day of Service on September 27, 2014, will transform schools all around the world into healthier places to live, learn, work, and play. Through local action, hundreds of thousands of students, parents, educators and community members will volunteer their time on school projects that emphasize the importance of sustainability. To support this effort, we provide a compendium of project ideas – including many intended to help improve school occupant health – as well as a continuously updated an online map to help community members find nearby events.
Specially for Educators
With NEA members in mind, we’ve come up with a new pathway this year for educators who want to incorporate the spirit of Green Apple Day of Service into their classroom activities. This quick and easy form opens the door to this initiative for educators by providing free examples of sustainability and environmental education lesson plans that k-12 teachers at every level can implement in their classes. These lesson ideas are meant as starting blocks – we also invite you to get involved through your own favorite sustainability focused lesson plans. We hope this new tool helps educators meaningfully connect with Green Apple Day of Service while enhancing your goals in the classroom.
Educators who join us this Green Apple Day of Service will also receive a complimentary registration to take the Green Classroom Professional Certificate ($60 dollar value). Endorsed by NEA, this certificate program provides K-12 educators and school staff with the knowledge to identify what supports or impedes healthy, resource efficient and environmentally sustainable learning spaces. The course and exam help participants recognize, adopt, and implement practices that keep teachers and students focused, alert and ready to learn.
