As we head into 2013, with all of its challenges, there is one thing I know: we will do more to meet the health and safety issues confronting students and educators. Because of our extraordinary partnerships and the amazing work of NEA members, NEA HIN will be strengthening and expanding programs that help kids.
Today, too many students are obese. NEA HIN’s Bag the Junk program will work with states to remove junk food from school vending machines. We aim to replace that with nutritious food.
Today, too many students are hungry. NEA HIN will continue to be a partner in the successful Breakfast in the Classroom program to deliver breakfast to children so that they start the day ready to learn.
Today, too many students misuse other people’s prescription drugs. NEA HIN will continue its Rx for Understanding program to stop the abuse.
Today, Asthma is the leading cause of school absenteeism due to a chronic illness. NEA HIN will increase work to identify and diminish allergens in schools.
And today, too many children are dying from guns. NEA HIN will respectfully work with others, including gun advocates, on ideas for how we as a society can keep our children safe.
NEA HIN is intent on taking action to improve the health and safety of students and educators. We are helping to make sure children are prepared to succeed in school. We are grateful to work with dedicated and expert partner organizations to advance our shared goals.
I am proud to be part of this effort. Stay connected to us. Your ideas, your participation, and your support will make a difference.
To you and yours, Happy New Year.
