Talking About Traumatic Events

Each day, students across the country look to NEA members for guidance and support in uncertain times.  Whether you’re an educator, parent, guardian, caregiver, colleague or combination of those, it is a humbling experience to help manage the reaction of someone affected by a trauma.

NEA HIN is here to help.

We have resources to help facilitate conversations about natural disasters and acts of violence.

Remember:

  • Recovery is different for everyone, but it may take time
  • Be patient, you can hasten a return to normalcy by creating a safe space so that affected individuals can share their feelings, when they’re ready
  • Remain calm and reassuring and promote positive coping and problem-solving skills

If you find yourself playing the role of a caregiver, please remember these 3 rules:

  1. You can’t take care of anyone else until you’ve taken care of yourself
  2. Remember to eat something –  it’s often the first thing that we forget to do when we’re dealing with trauma
  3. Smile –  this simple act can be amazingly impactful on others in a positive way

Additional Information:

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is dealing with a trauma.  You’re not alone.

Please let us know if there is something we can do to help.
