Over 1,000 parents were asked if they knew why kids under age 13 shouldn’t be on Facebook. Only 2 knew the correct answer! A study was conducted asking 1,007 parents the reason why kids under age 13 are not allowed to have Facebook accounts. “Perverts” was listed as one of the possible answers. While perverts are definitely a reason to keep kids away from Facebook, only two parents gave the correct answer which is “Privacy.” As parents, we sometimes want our kids to fit in and be accepted by their peers. MSNBC reported on these findings and what’s interesting about the article, is that parents are allowing their under aged children to join Facebook. I have personally heard of many guardians who are ok with their under aged child having a Facebook page mainly because they are aware of it. This basically defeats the need for privacy. It’s great that parents want to protect their kids from perverts and possibly keeping abreast of their child’s online interactions. However, this rule is in place to protect the child’s privacy and personal information. Even the best digital citizens can be the victim of privacy invasion. Read the full report here.
