NEA HIN developed lesson plans to provide middle and high school teachers with a curriculum resource to teach the topics of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and vaccine education. These topics are connected because of the ever expanding use of vaccines to prevent STIs, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B. This advancement creates a need for a greater awareness of the importance of vaccination generally, as well as its role in protecting young people’s sexual health.
The lesson plans were created with an integrated curriculum approach, emphasizing student involvement in the learning process and utilizing research-based instructional practices. The content and activities can be adapted easily to the needs of your students and the requirements of your school or school district. The lesson plans are correlated to academic standards from national educational organizations allowing for easy integration into your school district or state curriculum.
Each plan contains: comprehensive teacher background materials and suggested websites, an overview of instructional strategies, lesson vocabulary, evaluation rubrics, student reading materials, and reproducible handouts.
