National AIDS Hotline: Classroom Calls |
1994, the National AIDS Hotline instituted the Classroom Calls program.
This program targets school-age youth in a classroom setting. With
the assistance of a teacher, students call the Hotline on a speaker
phone and ask questions in a group format. Even when the school system
has specific curriculum and topic guidelines regarding allowable question
and answers (e.g. abstinence only, safer sex, condoms), students can
still get important and valuable information that can be used to begin
a dialogue within the classroom and even at home. In the past two
years, Classroom Calls has reached over 12,000 students in over 600
classrooms across the country, ranging from 3rd graders to seniors
in high school.
success of Classroom Calls has led to the Parents Calls program. This
program allows parents to get information they need to initiate and
maintain an open dialogue with their children. The Hotline is toll
free and is available 24 hours a day.
