Workshop Presentations: March 9

  • Breakfast: The Most Important Meal of the Day – Saturday, March 9th (10:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.)

Students who eat breakfast do better in school and have fewer visits to the nurse’s office and fewer discipline referrals. Nationally, 20.3 million children get a free or reduced-price lunch on an average school day but only 9.8 million children get a free or reduced-price breakfast on an average school day. By transitioning to an in-classroom service model, schools can increase participation, increase revenue, and improve the health and well-being of their students.

This workshop will identify the critical elements for a Breakfast in the Classroom program, share strategies for overcoming obstacles, and discuss ways to expand school breakfast programs in school districts. Participants will learn from the experiences of NEA members in Jefferson County, Kentucky, who successfully implemented a Breakfast in the Classroom program. Participants will also discuss the benefits to NEA affiliates of supporting breakfast expansion. To learn more about this session click here.

  • Eat, Drink, and Be Prepared: Food Allergies in the School Environment – Saturday, March 9th (8:15 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.)

Do you know how to recognize the symptoms of a food allergy reaction and what to do if a student has one? National estimates state that 4 out of 100 children in the U.S. have a food allergy and many students with undiagnosed food allergies experience their first reaction while at school. Severe food allergy reactions can result in a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis so it’s important that ALL school staff be prepared and understand their role in helping to manage food allergies in schools.

This session will provide participants with information on how to recognize, prevent, and respond to food allergy emergencies in the school environment.  Participants will learn about the role of each member of the school community and key components of a school food allergy management plan. Under the guidance of a health professional, participants will learn how to and practice administering an epinephrine auto-injector.  To learn more about this session click here.
