Emerging Health Issues of Concern to NEA Members

Emerging
Health Issues of Concern to NEA Members

Each year, elected
delegates attend the NEA Representative Assembly, serving as representatives
of their state and local membership, reviewing business and budget plans,
and bringing new business to the table. New Business Items (NBI’s) adopted
by NEA Representative Assemblies have shaped many NEA HIN programs, while
others have encouraged and supported continuation of existing programs.
Many issues of special concern to NEA members are addressed throughout
this website.

Since 1994, NEA HIN
has initiated a variety of women’s health programs, including our Project
REACH breast and cervical cancer training program, to meet the needs of
NEA members. Most recent NBI’s have addressed anabolic steroids, youth
gambling, and women’s access to health care. Below are some important
links to these emerging issues.

Anabolic
Steroids:
Since the 1950s, some
athletes have been taking anabolic steroids to build muscle and boost
their athletic performance. Increasingly, other segments of the population
also have been taking these compounds. Learn more about anabolic steroids
and use among adolescents:

Youth
Gambling:

Research indicates that 40% to 86% of high school teenagers have gambled
and that 1 out of 7 are experiencing serious gambling related problems.
Several state and national groups are addressing this issue through prevention
programs targeted at school age youth. Learn more about youth gambling
and what’s being done about it:

Women’s
Access to Health Care:
According to the Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality, future efforts to improve the health care provided
to women should focus on three areas: coordination of care, interaction
with the health care system, and the relationship between socioeconomic
status and health. Learn more about women’s health care trends and emerging
issues:
