For the fourth consecutive year, the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is hosting
the Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools National Symposium from October 25-28*,
2003, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington,
D.C. This year the National Education
Association Health Information Network (NEA
HIN), a co-sponsor of the Symposium, will
be conducting a pre-Symposium session on
Saturday,
October 25, to address indoor air quality
(IAQ) issues from the union perspective.
The Symposium centers on IAQ Tools for
Schools, a nationwide initiative to help school employees and
others assess, resolve, and prevent IAQ problems
and reduce exposure to asthma triggers in
schools. Each year teachers, education support
professionals, school board officials, administrators,
union representatives and others attend the
conference to discuss good IAQ in our nation’s
schools. Innovative workshops will
be offered, addressing mold remediation,
school planning and design, student and staff
performance, media strategies, financing,
asthma management, and more. And, we
are especially excited that NEA President
Reg Weaver will deliver this year’s Symposium’s
opening remarks!

schedule and sessions.
Through
a cooperative agreement with EPA and supplemental
funding from the NEA, NEA HIN will provide
funding to send 10-12 teams of members and
UniServ staff
approximately 55 people) to
attend
the
Symposium and pre-Symposium session. This
funding covers the cost of travel, conference
registration fees, lodging, and meals. Substitute
teacher funds will be available for teachers
who need this coverage.
This year NEA HIN is recruiting and funding teams of NEA members and UniServ staff who are willing
to commit to improving the IAQ in their school
and/or school district. By recruiting teams we hope to foster successful implementation of IAQ
management plans in schools across the country.
*The IAQ TfS Symposium will be held October
26-28th. NEA HIN is conducting a pre-Symposium
session on October 25th to address IAQ issues
from the union perspective. This session
is mandatory for NEA members and UniServ
staff attending the Symposium.
