IAQ IN
SCHOOLS

There is significant evidence that indoor air quality (IAQ) is
a problem in many schools nationwide. A 1995 US Government Accounting
Office school facilities survey reported that at least 20% of US
schools have unsatisfactory IAQ. Proper design, repair, maintenance,
and operation of heating and cooling systems can be provided through
energy performance contracts whereby schools can enjoy upgraded
equipment, a reduction in energy costs, and proper ventilation.
The National Association of Energy Service Companies (NAESCO) and
the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have begun an exciting
demonstration program where free IAQ measurements will be conducted
simultaneously with an energy efficient retrofit at schools across
the country. Contact David Birr, NAESCO at 847/842-9106 or Yasmine
Redding, EPA at 702/798-3159 for further information and for possible
consideration as part of the demonstration program.
