Many exciting things
happened at the 1999 National Education Association (NEA) Representative
Assembly (RA) in Orlando, FL. Various issues of importance were
addressed, and indoor air quality(IAQ) in schools emerged as a critical
issue that schools need help with.
NEA Health Information
Network (HIN) staff distributed 500 copies of the IAQ and You information
packet in one day, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
staff signed up 200 people in two days to receive copies of the
IAQ Tools for Schools Action Kit.
In response to the growing
need for help in addressing IAQ problems in schools, Virginia Education
Association member Shirley Mitchell drafted a new business item
on IAQ in schools. Speaking for her delegation, Shirley argued the
benefits of implementing the IAQ Tools for Schools Action Kit. No
one argued against her, and the new business item was passed unanimously.
The new business item was adopted as follows:
The NEA urges all
state and local affiliates to implement the Indoor Air Quality Tools
for Schools Action Kit in their schools starting with the 1999-2000
school year.
The NEA HINÌs existing
IAQ in Schools program is ready for the challenge of implementing
the Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools Action Kit in as many public
schools as possible. Our goal is to help the US EPA reach their
goal of implementing the kit in 15,000 public schools across the
country by 2010.
If you would like to
implement the kit in your school or district, and are committed
to doing so, you may obtain a free kit from the NEA HIN. To find
