Preparing the class

Preparing the class

  • Make sure your students have had basic HIV prevention education.
  • Tell the students what will happen, so they know when the speaker is scheduled for, the length of the presentation and their role.
  • Acknowledge that some students may be fearful and uncomfortable; others curious or excited.
  • With the help of the students, establish ground rules as you would for any class dealing with sensitive subjects. Ground rules are reminders of the common courtesies usually afforded guests and members of the class when a serious subject is being discussed. Establishing them will help to protect students who are uncomfortable, self-reveling, or nervous, and protect the speaker as well.
  • Be sensitive to the possibility that students may know someone (friend, family member, teacher) with HIV, or even have HIV themselves.
