Be Prepared!
Chance favors only the prepared mind.
-Louis Pasteur
No longer are we the “island nation” with our homeland protected by huge bodies of water. The events of September 11th forever changed the way we must view ourselves, our students, our loved ones and our neighbors.
To the horrific tragedy of that day, we add events such as Columbine and the “DC-area serial sniper” to the all-too-constant news diet of drugs, violence, hate crimes, terror, fear and uncertainty. The world our children are inheriting is a long way from the relative comfort and safety most of us experienced as children.
Yes, we lived under the cloud of a Cold War and the threat of global nuclear war. But, somehow that was always so distant and impersonal. Today’s terror and tragedies are around the corner, down the block and across the street.
The purpose of the “Be Prepared!” program is to assist teachers, ESP, parents and students in coping with today’s realities before a crisis or incident takes place, during a crisis and in the weeks that follow a tragedy.
