Lesson

Divide

class into small groups and read the following

scenario:

Your group has been chosen by the National Historical

Society to create a time capsule that will be

buried at the site of the World Trade Center in

New York. The time capsule will be opened in 1000

years. Because the NHS (historical society) recognizes

that in a thousand years the events of one day

may not be completely understood, the organization

wants the capsule to reflect what we as Americans

were like on September 11, 2001 and then one year

later (today).

Your task is to create a time capsule that includes

10 items, 5 reflecting a year ago and 5 reflecting

today. There are certain things you may not include:

newspapers, magazines or any other print material,

video DVD or audiotapes. As a group, decide what

ten items you will include and why.

On the chart paper provided, list five items under

9/11/01 and five under 9/11/02.

When all groups have completed the task, share

ideas.
