PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION

As part of the requirements to implement a national
vaccination program, the Nation’s laboratorians
must be prepared to provide information about
available laboratory testing of febrile rash illnesses,
and evaluation of vaccinia (smallpox) vaccine
related to adverse events to clinicians and others
who use laboratory services. This program will
explain the relationship and resources available
in clinical and public health laboratories, indications
for laboratory testing, the types and availability
of testing, test interpretation, and specific
specimen collection, handling, and transportation
requirements.

GOAL
Prepare the Nation’s laboratorians to respond
effectively to vaccine adverse events and the
intentional release of smallpox.

TARGET
AUDIENCE

All laboratorians and those who use laboratory
services; laboratorians in state and local public
health, clinical, reference, and physician office
laboratories; pathologists, physicians, phlebotomists,
and specimen handlers and transporters; and State
Chief Medical Officers and Epidemiologists.

PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION

Implementation of a smallpox vaccination program
requires clinicians to be prepared to recognize
and provide care to persons who develop adverse
reactions as a result of vaccination. This program
will provide information to clinicians on assessment,
diagnosis, management, and treatment of patients
with suspected adverse events.

GOAL
Prepare clinicians to recognize, report, and clinically
manage adverse reactions to smallpox vaccination.

TARGET
AUDIENCES

Clinical specialists, including infectious disease
specialists, dermatologists, critical care specialists,
neurologists, ophthalmologists, allergists, and
immunologists; primary care clinicians, including
emergency room clinicians, internists, pediatricians,
and family medicine physicians; and state and
local health department staff involved in adverse
event assessment and reporting
