Petition BackgroundSubmitted by Markisha, Kindergarten teacher in North Carolina It’s hard to learn or even think when you’re hungry. As a teacher, I see what happens when students don’t have enough to eat. Their eyes don’t sparkle the way children’s are supposed to. It’s harder for them to retain the concepts I teach in class. Their minds are tired and preoccupied, thinking about how long it’s been since they’ve had a good meal. For nearly 16 million children, hunger is an everyday reality. But schools and communities can come together to tackle childhood hunger and help ensure every student is ready to learn – and it all starts with breakfast. Since my school began serving breakfast in classrooms, my students’ learning readiness has improved and they are eager to start the school day. They enjoy the family environment that breakfast creates and are better able to concentrate. Join me during National School Breakfast Week and support programs such as Breakfast in the Classroom as a way to tackle food insecurity and foster learning readiness for every child. |
