Community
Profile

Syracuse is
located in central New York State, within Onondaga County. The county
is a combination of rural, suburban and urban areas, with Syracuse
as the “big city”, with a population of approximately
225,000. Locally, 24% of children live with only one parent, 11%
of 12-17 year olds need substance abuse services, and in some census
tracks, 1 in 4 teeage women become pregnant. Syracuse is a “blue
collar” city, although many manufacturing plants have closed
and been replaced by service industry.

Status of
Parent Education

New York State
has no institutional funding for parent education. Various health
issues are state and federally funded: teen pregnancy, infant mortality,
HIV, and youth violence. Many community based organizations provide
parent education on a range of topics.

Can We Talk?
is sponsored by CONTACT, a mental health organization. Can We Talk?
is part of the Adolescent Risk Reduction Initiative and the Community
Based Pregnancy Prevention Project and the Community Service Project.

The target area
for Can We Talk? is Onondaga County, with particular focus on Central
Syracuse.


Funding Can We Talk?

The county’s
family planning center provides support, and the Central New York
Council on Adolescent Pregnancy provide money from the state to
pay for staff time.

Community
Partnerships

There are many
partners involved in making Can We Talk? a success. State and County
Health Departments, the Healthy Start program (a federally funded
program), several CBO’s, religious organizations, schools, etc.

Evaluation
Progress

Parent participants’
attitudes and behavior change are being evaluated by CONTACT.
