The NEA HIN Disaster Relief Fund is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt charity that provides aid to the education community in the wake of large scale disaster. When the Fund is activated in response to a disaster, NEA HIN staff work with state and local NEA affiliates to give grants to local aid organizations that are positioned to meet the needs of disaster-struck education communities.
The Fund was created in 2006, when NEA and its members raised $1.5M to provide relief to educators and students in the Gulf Coast after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The fund helped repair damaged homes and schools, gave financial assistance to temporarily unemployed or relocated school employees, and provided a disaster relief hotline to aid victims.
More recently, the Fund has helped Texas and Louisiana recover from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike though donations to the TSTA and LAE disaster relief funds. In 2011, the Fund provided aid to the Louisa County, VA school system to help recover from a 5.8 magnitude earthquake. NEA HIN’s assistance provided necessities like wireless internet to connect temporary classrooms and rain cover for students who now must walk outdoors between classroom trailers.
The Fund is administered by the NEA Health Information Network, a 501(c)(3) organization that promotes health and safety in public schools through education and advocacy.
Contributions to the Fund are fully tax deductible. Donate online now or send a check payable to:
