New Director to the HIN
Effective December
1, 1996, Jerald L. Newberry assumed the position of Executive Director
of the National Education Association Health Information Network (NEA
HIN).
serving as Executive Director. He joins the HIN after a long and distinguished
career with Fairfax County Public Schools. From 1990 through 1996,
Mr. Newberry directed the system’s Family Life and Education program
and implemented a comprehensive health education program. During this
period, Fairfax County’s teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease
rates fell more than forty percent.
Mr. Newberry designed an HIV prevention training program for the American
Psychological Association and trained mental health staff in cities
across the United States to deliver HIV prevention education. Among
his numerous publications is a set of sexuality guidelines for parents
of elementary, middle and high school students that include HIV prevention
messages. The guidelines have since been translated into five languages.
NEA’s Creative Leadership in Human Rights Award for his efforts working
with minority youth and their families. The Virginia Education Association
awarded him its Distinguished Leadership in the Pursuit of Educational
Excellence Award in 1995.
