New Director to the HIN

Effective December
1, 1996, Jerald L. Newberry assumed the position of Executive Director
of the National Education Association Health Information Network (NEA
HIN).
We at the NEA HIN are delighted to have Mr. Newberry
serving as Executive Director. He joins the HIN after a long and distinguished
career with Fairfax County Public Schools. From 1990 through 1996,
Mr. Newberry directed the system’s Family Life and Education program
and implemented a comprehensive health education program. During this
period, Fairfax County’s teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease
rates fell more than forty percent.
As a nationally known trainer,
Mr. Newberry designed an HIV prevention training program for the American
Psychological Association and trained mental health staff in cities
across the United States to deliver HIV prevention education. Among
his numerous publications is a set of sexuality guidelines for parents
of elementary, middle and high school students that include HIV prevention
messages. The guidelines have since been translated into five languages.
In 1994, Mr. Newberry received
NEA’s Creative Leadership in Human Rights Award for his efforts working
with minority youth and their families. The Virginia Education Association
awarded him its Distinguished Leadership in the Pursuit of Educational
Excellence Award in 1995.
The NEA Health Information Network
leadership and staff anticipate a long and rewarding period of accomplishment
under his stewardship.
