Executive Director
National Education Association Health Information Network

The NEA Health Information Network (NEA HIN) is seeking an Executive Director who will provide dynamic leadership for the strategic vision, growth, and future of the organization.
NEA HIN is an independent health and safety non-profit organization closely aligned to the National Education Association (NEA). NEA HIN advances information, programs, services, and policies that improve the health and safety of NEA members and the students they serve.
NEA HIN works to improve the health and safety of school personnel and students by working with NEA and NEA affiliates to provide school communities with vital and timely information that supports teaching, other educational services, and student achievement. NEA HIN advocates for adequate health protections in the workplace and develops training and technical assistance materials to encourage education employees and students to practice healthy behaviors and make healthy decisions, inside and outside the school environment.
Responsibilities:
Leadership & Governance
- Collaborating with the NEA HIN Board to establish measureable goals and strategic direction by providing informed perspectives and counsel for programs;
- Working with the NEA HIN Board to identify, develop, pursue, and secure fundraising;
- Assisting with managing Board operations and committees;
- Providing routine updates and information to NEA HIN Board;
- Helping recruit and situate new Board members;
- Providing regular update of NEA HIN activities to NEA governance.
Management
- Directing, coaching and mentoring a cohesive, high performing, and efficient management team that works collaboratively to achieve organization objectives;
- Representing and maintaining workplace values, including mutual respect, trust, commitment to equity, expertise, diversity, responsiveness, and caring;
- Driving the highest levels of quality in program delivery, setting clear goals and performance indicators;
- Directing and supervising implementation of NEA HIN programs, policies, and practices;
- Guiding on the use of appropriate data and research that informs NEA HIN work, and inspiring the continual review, analysis, and use of such data;
- Keeping abreast of relevant health and safety trends affecting students, NEA members, and their school communities, as well as developments with the NEA membership and affiliates;
- Being available as a responsive, hands-on problem-solver when needs arise;
- Participating in staff union contract negotiations and ensuring compliance with contract requirements;
- Fostering clarity and transparency to ensure shared staff knowledge of direction and priorities;
- Ensuring relationships with NEA national and state affiliate staff are active, positive, and two-way;
- Managing compliance with regulatory, tax, legal, and reporting needs.
Selection Criteria:
Tier 1 (Essential):
- A bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university is required. An advanced degree or advanced degree coursework is strongly desired.
- At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in a related field (such as teaching, school health-related fields, and health policy) and including at least three years in directing strategy and managing staff, projects, partner relationships, and budgets.
- Experience in implementing health policy in real world settings, working with teachers and other public school educators, working with labor unions, building supportive alliances with third parties, navigating complex governance processes, fundraising, and marketing.
- Demonstrated ability to support unions and be a strong advocate of the NEA.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a Board to develop a strong vision for the growth and future of NEA HIN.
- Demonstrated ability to fundraise.
- Dedication to personal integrity and to living organizational values and beliefs on a daily basis.
Tier 2 (Desirable):
- Experience managing staff in a union environment.
- Ability to co-create with critical staff and partners appropriate strategies and plans with valid and realistic measures of performance.
- Organizational savvy, including a commitment to learning the workings and procedures of an organization.
- Skilled communicator, including written, presentation and oral skills, at an executive level.
- Ability to conduct media interviews and appear in other public forums.
- Ability to lead effective meetings and facilitate solutions.
- Dedication to regular and careful performance reviews to recognize staff assets and address needs.

MISSION. The mission of the NEA Health Information Network (NEA HIN) is to improve the health and safety of the school community by developing and disseminating information and programs that educate and empower school professionals and positively impact the lives of students.

FOCUS AREAS
NEA HIN has two major focus areas, with priority categories under each. They are:
Physical Health and Wellness
- Disease prevention and management, including chronic disease, child obesity, physical activity, nutrition ,immunization, NEA member wellness, and sexual and reproductive health
- Mental health and wellness, including stress management, anxiety, depression, and addiction
Environmental Health
- Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), including cleaning for health and green schools initiatives
- School Safety, including emergency preparedness and response and online safety
OPERATIONS
A 501(c) 3 organization, NEA HIN has revenues of $2.3 million annually. It is housed in the national headquarters building of the National Education Association in Washington, DC. NEA HIN has a 15-member Board of Directors comprising NEA officials, corporate officers, private citizens, and members of the medical community.
NEA HIN leadership and the outgoing Executive Director have successfully led the organization in being a professionally-run, fiscally viable, and respected organization.
