Cancer
Information
Over
the last decade, studies have indicated the
working women have higher rates of death from
breast cancer than non-working women . Some
studies have even shown that teachers, in particular,
have higher rates of death from breast cancer
than women in other occupations . In response
to these studies, NEA HIN launched a national
campaign in 1993 to educate NEA members and
their communities about strategies for cancer
prevention and the benefits of cancer screening
and early detection. Through cooperative agreement
funding from the Division of Cancer Control
and Prevention (1994-2002), grant funding from
the AVON Breast Cancer Crusade (1998), and
ongoing funding from NEA member contributions
through the Vivian Roy Bowser Cancer Education
Fund, NEA HIN has developed a variety of resources
and materials to assist school employees in
establishing local cancer education and screening
activities in their school communities, and
linking them to critical health and cancer
information.
