National Radon Awareness Week
|
Mark
your calendars! National Radon Action Week (NRAW) is scheduled
for October 17-23, 1999. The week kicks off an entire year of
activities designed to increase awareness of radonÌs serious
health effects, encourage Americans to take action on radon
in their homes, and ultimately reduce health risks posed to
Americans by radon. This yearÌs NRAW theme is ÏTake the National
Radon TestÓ. States and other health and consumer agencies will
be hosting various activities to educate the public about radon
and to encourage people to test their homes. Radon is a naturally
occurring radioactive gas that gets into the air you breathe.
It can get into any type of building Ò homes, offices, and schools.
Exposure to high levels of radon can increase the risk of lung
cancer. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after
smoking. For more information about NRAW, call 800-55-RADON.
